Indian Coast Guard Selection Procedure 2024
The selection process for Assistant Commandants depends on an all-India ranking, determined by how well candidates perform in different stages (I – V) of the examination (explained in detail below) and the number of open positions for the job. Successfully passing through Stages I, II, III, IV, and V is mandatory for getting recruited into the ICG. All candidates will undergo mandatory biometrics, photo identification, and document verification at different examination stages. The specifics of each stage of the examination are explained below.
In Stage-I (CGCAT):
all candidates applying for various branches will take part in a computer-based online screening test called CGCAT. This test will happen at specific centres across India. The exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), with each correct answer earning four marks and each incorrect answer resulting in a deduction of one mark. The test will last for two hours, and the language of the test paper will be English. Here is the subject-wise distribution of marks.
Exam | Subjects |
Combined CGCAT | A. English B. Reasoning & Numerical Ability C. General Science & Mathematical aptitude D. General Knowledge |
Stage II (PSB):
Based on their performance in Stage I, candidates will be selected to participate in Stage II (PSB), which takes place for a day at Noida, Mumbai/Goa, Chennai, and Kolkata centres. When filling out the application form, candidates can choose their preferred PSB center.
The evaluation in Stage II involves a Computerized Cognitive Battery Test (CCBT) and a Picture Perception & Discussion Test (PP&DT). The CCBT will be conducted in English and will consist of objective-type questions. In the PP&DT, candidates are encouraged to speak and discuss in English, but they have the option to use Hindi if they prefer.
It’s important to note that the Stage II examination is solely for qualification, meaning candidates will either pass or fail.
Stage-III (FSB):
After completing Stage II, candidates who qualify for Stage III will be notified at their respective centers. The details of Stage III will be shared with candidates through their Login IDs. FSB, which stands for the Final Selection Board, takes place at the Coast Guard Selection Board (CGSB) in Noida and spans over five days.
During this time, candidates undergo a Psychological Test, a Group Task, and an Interview (Personality test). The final selection process is expected to take place tentatively from July to October 2024. All the documents and certificates verified during PSB must be presented in their original form during FSB.
On the last day, a board conference is held, and candidates recommended during this stage proceed to Stage IV, which involves an initial/special medical examination.
Stage-IV (Medical Examination):
Candidates who successfully clear Stage III are required to undergo a special medical examination at Base Hospital, New Delhi. If a candidate is declared unfit for the Special Medical Board (SMB), they will still be included in the merit list because they have the option to appeal the decision.
These candidates will then report for appeal medicals at a designated service hospital within 42 days of completing the SMB. If declared unfit during appeal medicals, these candidates can request a review of the results from the Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS) through the Directorate of Recruitment at Coast Guard Headquarters.
The Service Headquarters will consider such requests, and the Review Medical Board (RMB) will be granted based on the merits of the case. It’s important to note that RMB is not a guaranteed right. If the review is approved, the designated hospital for the review will be indicated in the approval. The decision of the Review Medical Board (RMB) will be final, and no further appeals will be accepted.
Stage-V (Induction):
Those who complete Stage IV and secure a position in the All India Merit List, based on the available vacancies, will be provisionally selected for training. They will need to report to INA Ezhimala for the Naval Orientation Course (NOC) as instructed. The All India Merit List is determined by combining the marks obtained in Stage I and Stage III. Once candidates arrive at INA Ezhimala for training, they will undergo photo and biometric verification.
